Gosforth Empire v Tans

Posted by Tim W on February 7, 2017

Thrashed. Not one of our better performances, with only Klauss having much to be proud of. He lost from a drawn position after going for a win. Fritz rated my game against Mike better than it felt over the board. An English / Kings Indian gave Mike lots of queen side pressure, and I eventually I wilted. Well played Gosforth.

Leam Lane v Tans

Posted by Tim W on January 11, 2017

Interesting match at Leam Lane last night. The Tans were at full strength and probably needed to be.

First to finish was Gary, leading from the front with a spectacular finish, kings on opposite sides of the board, and Gary blocking a dangerous pawn with his king on the queenside while attacking on the kingside (0-1). Next was Tim, who had much the worst of an English (why do I play this so badly in matches ?) , and was pleasantly suprised by Alan Young’s offer of a draw (½-1½). I understood more of Mariana’s game than is normal for me, usually she produces a win from nowhere (in my eyes), but this time a pretty king side attack yielded a new queen and with it the game (½-2½). David was also surprised when John Marsh offered a draw in an even position, and accepted the draw because now the match was won (1-3). This left the heavyweights David Walker & Klauss to give a demonstration of why they are so highly rated. Watching I thought Klauss was ahead, because of David weak 7th rank, then David sacrificed the exchange and seemed to be winning, but Klauss had seen he could win it back. Eventually it came done to King & 3 pawns each, with advantage to Klauss, but if there was a win he didn’t find it, which probably means there wasn’t one.

So a fine victory for Tans 1½-3½

Tans v Gosforth Regents

Posted by Tim W on December 7, 2016

A much tighter match than the scoreline suggest, and also a crucial win for the Tans.  Almost every game could have gone either way. The evening finished with a David lesson in how to play with increments. He played as if that 10 secs was plenty of time for each move,  and calmly turned a difficult position with R,B & N against Q & R into a win.

Durham City v Tans

Posted by Tim W on February 11, 2016

Revenge for Durham. Last season we beat them 4-1, a resounding victory against the reigning 2013-14 champions. This year we were outgraded by a total of 202 points and lost 4½-½.

I was the most outgraded (51 points), and probably the most outplayed as well, castling queen side in an English. I’m not convinced that castling queen side was wrong, but my opponent was,  played well and took full advantage. Once again pride of place goes to Alex who claimed the only half point with a draw against an opponent graded 40 points more than him. Well played Alex

Tans v Leam Lane Aces

Posted by Tim W on January 27, 2016

Following on from the Reivers stunning performance last week against Tynemouth C last week, the Tans produced one of their own, beating Leam Lane Aces 4½-½. As non-playing captain, I take all the credit for this, but particular mention should also be made of Klauss, who had a fine victory over David Walker, a FIDE Master. Well played Klauss.
